How to be Healthy While Traveling and Still Have Fun

Travel used to be my health kryptonite. I used it as an excuse to abandon all my good habits. I hated coming back 5 pounds heavier.

  • Over the past year, I've cracked healthy travel. Today's tips are about eating healthy: Stay in an Airbnb, so you can cook your own meals. We try to eat two at home and one out each day.

  • Discover local foods at markets or the grocery store. Buy that fruit you don't recognize or that meat you have no idea how to cook. Make it an adventure with your kids. The figs I ate in Morocco were far better than the desserts.

  • Find local healthy snacks at the grocery store. Some of our favorites: nuts, fruit, lean cured meat, olive packs or individual cheeses and yogurts. Bring them with you to prevent meltdowns (both yours and the kids).

  • Make veggies easy. Do a mini-meal prep. Cut up a big bowl of veggies each morning to snack on (either at home or on-the-go).

  • Become connoisseurs of healthy delicacies. I love sampling hot sauce, coffee, pickles, and oysters around the world. All are practically calorie free and fun to compare.

  • Share. When ordering out default to ordering family style, so you can taste all the richer delicacies without having to have a whole plate.

  • Drink a ton of water. Bring an empty water bottle with you (and the same for your kids).

  • Have a plan for when you get back. Give a gift to future you by doubling a few of your meals the week before you go, so you have healthy options to jump back into when you get back.
